With Engawa, our vision is to create a flexible, functional craft courtyard that blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Inspired by traditional Norwegian wooden architecture, the project embodies authenticity, memory, and openness anchored in a clear primary structure that both respects tradition and supports contemporary creative practices.
The building dissolves the threshold between indoors and outdoors, allowing nature to flow into the architectural experience.

A defining feature is the south-facing veranda, which forms a soft, transitional space between the new structure and the Follo Museum. It outlines the building’s edges while softening its silhouette and offering protection from sun and rain. This area supports seasonal use and accommodates a variety of educational and community-driven activities.
Engawa is envisioned as a forward-looking hub for sustainability, craftsmanship, and culture. The layout is intentionally clear and functional: the main volume runs parallel to the Follo Museum, reinforcing the site’s existing orientation and creating a strong spatial connection between the two buildings. Between them, a new courtyard emerges as a communal heart for making, learning, and exchange.
Natural materials are used throughout, lending the building a warm, light, and inviting atmosphere. The interior is open and flexible, with a clear spatial division between workshop and service zones. Engawa reflects the essence of Scandinavian design unpretentious, sustainable, and deeply human-centered.
